Captain Joe went out Friday night and fished till 4:30am. He caught fish of 13, 20 and 31 pounds.

When I used to post reports on my web page and not on this blog I was always having people tell me how much they enjoyed it and would read it all the time. I got to wondering if this blog was a turn off or something because I don't seem to get the feed back I used to. So a couple days ago I added a hit counter to the blog(I already have one on the main site) and it seems like plenty of people are coming to the blog still. I guess that's a good thing but it sure would be nice if there was a little more interaction from the readers. I realize the fishing reports have been a little light. The reason is my boat has been getting repaired for almost the last year! Capt Joe has been doing plenty of fishing but is not to good at getting the pictures or reports to me. I hope that this summer as a begin to post more fishing reports that the customers and readers will begin to comment more.

Sometimes it just seems like I'm updating my self on whats going on.

Also If you want to be automatically updated when a new post is made you can sign up on the right side of the page to "Follow" the blog. That would also help me know who is reading this.

Will my boat has been in the shop check out what I've been working on.

June 4th Report

Captain Joe went out Saturday Night and caught a few Nice Blues. The biggest were 2 30's and a 27 pounder.

Upper James Kayak Fishing

Saturday I went kayak fishing for smallmouth bass on the Upper James. We floated from Pony Pasture to Reedy Creek, about 4 miles. It only my second time doing this trip in a kayak and I am 2 for 2 on flipping going through the rapids. I lost a shoe and broke a rod. It's a great trip for catching a lot of fish. We never soom to get any of any size

We caught about 20 fish all but 1 were smallmouth and the 1 being a largemouth.
I tried to catch some bream for flatheads but never could get any. Next time I'll do what I usually do and bring my own.

We have been spoiled

As you know the James River is (or was) a world class fishery for Blue Catfish. I have noticed a decline in the last 4-5 years in the numbers of fish and size of fish. Don't get me wrong there are still plenty of Big Blues to be caught. I just think sometimes we need to put it in perspective. We used to be able to go out on the river for just a few hours and could expect multiple citations. It's just not that easy anymore. Commercial fishing takes some of the blame but I this article posted by the VADGIF helps explain more. It says that only 1% of Blue Catfish in the James River are larger than 32 inches and even less than that larger than 35" or 30 pounds. Also an average 30 pound (citation) fish is 16 years old and 60% of the catfish die before they get that age. This shouldn't be discouraging just some perspective.
